How to Prepare Files for CNC Cutting

A usable CNC drawing states what to cut, at what size, from which material, and which details need machining. Send reference dimensions even when supplying a CAD file.

Set the scale and separate cutting geometry

Use one declared unit system throughout the job and supply geometry at actual size. Include a known overall dimension so the reviewer can check the import scale. Keep part outlines separate from dimensions, notes and decorative reference lines. A PDF can explain the design, but a scanned drawing is not equivalent to editable vector geometry.

  • State millimetres or inches in the file and part schedule.
  • Close part outlines and remove duplicate overlapping lines.
  • Identify holes, pockets, rebates and engraving separately from through-cuts.

Describe the operations, not just the outlines

An outline alone does not explain a blind pocket or hardware hole. State the depth, diameter, machining face and reference edge for each feature. Router tools leave a radius in an internal corner; a square mating part may require a relief feature or a different joint. Flag fit-critical dimensions for review rather than assuming a universal cutting tolerance.

  • Name the material, grade and nominal thickness; actual sheet thickness can affect joinery.
  • Mark the visible face and grain direction on every relevant part.
  • Supply hardware specifications for hinge cups, connectors and slide drilling.

Send an organized part schedule

Give every part an ID that matches its drawing and list the quantity, finished dimensions, material, edging and room or assembly. If both a spreadsheet and CAD drawing are supplied, say which controls dimensions. Do not build tool compensation or an assumed cutter diameter into the part size unless the production team has requested it.

  • Example: SIDE-01 | quantity 2 | 720 × 560 mm finished | material and thickness | front edge banded.
  • Keep repeated parts grouped and label left/right or mirrored versions clearly.
  • Include only the current revision for production and label older files as reference.

No CAD file yet?

Start with a dimensioned sketch, photographs and a description of how the parts will be used. Distinguish dimensions you measured from ones that still need confirmation. Drawing assistance and production review may be needed before cutting; a concept image or AI rendering is not a fabrication-ready drawing. Resolve dimensions, materials and fit details before approving production.

Before requesting a quote

  • Current drawing revision and units
  • Part IDs, quantities and overall dimensions
  • Material, thickness, visible face and grain
  • Machining depths and hardware details
  • Edging schedule and required delivery date

Common questions

Can I request CNC cutting without a DXF file?

Yes. Begin with a dimensioned sketch, photos or a PDF for review. Additional drawing preparation may be required before manufacturing.

Should I offset my drawing for the router bit?

Normally provide the intended finished geometry and let the production team plan tool compensation. Confirm any special requirements with the reviewer.
