CNC Cutting Quotes: Cost Factors & Request Checklist
A CNC cutting price depends on the complete job, not just the size of its bounding rectangle. A consistent quote package helps suppliers price the same scope and reduces follow-up questions.
What changes the cost of CNC cutting?
Material grade and sheet yield affect the material portion of a quote. Programming, setup, tool changes, machining time and handling affect processing costs. Long contours, many holes, pockets, multiple machining faces and delicate parts can take more work than a simple rectangular panel of the same size. Grain direction and matched faces may limit how parts can be nested.
- Separate material supply from customer-supplied stock, if applicable.
- Identify cutting, drilling, pockets, engraving and edge finishing.
- Ask whether drawing cleanup, samples, assembly and packing are included.
Send quantities and finished specifications
Provide part IDs, quantities, dimensions, units, material and thickness. Identify the drawing revision and whether dimensions are finished or unbanded sizes. For repeated jobs, state the quantity needed now and distinguish it from possible future volumes. Repeat parts may share setup work, but a volume discount or fixed per-piece rate should not be assumed.
Make delivery part of the original request
Provide the destination postal or ZIP code and say whether you want pickup, parcel delivery or freight review. Include access restrictions, receiving hours and whether offloading equipment is available for a pallet. Packaging and shipping are different from cutting, and oversized, fragile or appearance-critical parts may need additional protection. A requested installation date is not a confirmed production or shipping date.
Compare quotes on equal terms
Check the currency, taxes, material grade, machining operations, edging, finish, packaging and delivery scope. Check whether drawing preparation is included and what starts the production clock. The lowest headline price may exclude work another supplier included. Confirm how revisions, material substitutions and changes to quantities affect price and scheduling before approval.
A practical request you can adapt
“Please quote the attached current-revision part list and drawings. Dimensions are finished sizes in millimetres. Material and edging are identified per part; quantities are for this order. Please separate any drawing preparation, cutting, drilling, edge banding, packing and delivery charges. The destination and desired delivery date are included. Please identify missing information and confirm feasibility and lead time before production.” Replace those assumptions with your actual job details.
Before requesting a quote
- Drawings or dimensioned sketch with revision
- Material, thickness, part sizes and quantities
- Grain, visible faces, machining and edging
- Finish and assembly scope
- Delivery destination, access and requested timing
Common questions
How much does custom CNC cutting cost?
There is no single price that fits every job. Material, quantity, setup, geometry, machining, finishing and delivery affect the quote; submit a consistent part schedule for project-specific pricing.
Can a quote be prepared from a sketch or PDF?
A sketch or PDF can start the review if dimensions, material and quantities are clear. The team will identify any additional drawing preparation needed before a production-ready quote or approval.
