MDF vs Plywood vs Melamine for CNC Parts
Choose sheet material for its application, finish and installation conditions, not just the sheet price. MDF, plywood and melamine solve different fabrication problems.
MDF: a consistent base for painted profiles
MDF has a comparatively uniform core that suits routed profiles, painted cabinet doors and decorative interior panels. Machined edges absorb finish differently from the faces, so allow for edge preparation and sealing in the finishing scope. MDF can be heavy; confirm support, fastener details and handling for large parts. Standard MDF is not an exterior or waterproof material.
Plywood: consider the grade as well as the thickness
Plywood uses cross-laminated veneers, but performance and appearance vary with core construction, face grade and adhesive classification. An exposed layered edge is a design choice, not a guarantee that every plywood grade will look the same. Internal voids, face defects and nominal-versus-actual thickness matter for machined joinery. Specify the plywood product rather than simply asking for “three-quarter-inch wood.”
- Identify exposed faces and whether the plywood edge remains visible.
- Confirm the veneer species, face grade and finish requirements.
- Provide load, span and support details for shelving; thickness alone does not establish capacity.
Melamine: a finished surface with an unfinished core edge
Melamine-faced panels are useful for cabinet interiors, closets and fixtures where a prefinished surface is wanted. The substrate may be particleboard or MDF, so “melamine” describes the surface rather than a complete material specification. The cut edge exposes that substrate and often needs edge banding. State the décor, core, thickness and matching edge treatment, especially when parts meet existing cabinetry.
Match the material to the installation
For damp interiors, outdoor exposure or strong sunlight, ask for a product specifically rated for those conditions. Moisture-resistant is not the same as waterproof, and an edge treatment does not automatically make a panel exterior-safe. In dry climates, acclimation and changes between an air-conditioned shop and the installation environment still matter. For acrylic signs and transparent displays, compare plastic-specific requirements separately rather than treating acrylic as a wood-panel substitute.
Compare the complete delivered part
Include the material, machining, edging, finishing, hardware preparation and transport when comparing options. A cheaper sheet can require more finishing or protection. Send a material preference and acceptable alternatives with the quote request, but ask for any substitution to be confirmed before production. Availability, stock size and finish match must be checked for the actual order.
Before requesting a quote
- Application and installation environment
- Exact grade, décor or approved alternatives
- Nominal thickness and critical fits
- Visible faces and exposed edges
- Finish, hardware, support and delivery requirements
Common questions
Is plywood always better than MDF for CNC cutting?
No. MDF can suit painted routed profiles, while plywood may suit visible veneer faces or layered edges. The application, grade, finish and construction determine the appropriate choice.
Does melamine need edge banding?
Exposed melamine-panel edges often need banding for appearance and protection. Specify which edges remain visible and which are concealed in the assembled piece.
